The Amazing Con of JT LeRoy revisited
by eatonhamilton
This thorough essay by writer by Nancy Rommelmann in the LA Times takes us through con woman Laura Albert’s long literary fraud as dienfranchised teen writer JT LeRoy. Con artists–and we may know some in our ordinary lives–mirror our concerns and thoughts back at us. Intelligent people find them compelling. JT LeRoy, who didn’t exist, was long celebrated by people such as Dennis Cooper, Dave Eggers, Mary Gaitskill, Lou Reed and Gus Van Sant.
