the problem with being trans is cis people. The problem with being queer is straight people. The problem with being disabled is abled people. The problem with being Black is white people. In other words, prejudice.

What I really like about this story, unlike many gender identity stories I’ve read, is that the protagonist’s gender identity struggle is as hidden from the reader as it would be from an outside observer in real life. The relentless internal violence that the protagonist experiences only pops out every now and again in the odd bit of quirky behaviour… until the dam finally bursts.
This is an incredibly sensitive story that acknowledges the protagonist’s whole reality, despite the overpowering nature of his internal condition that, for him, obliterates all but itself. So the point of view is both through the protagonist’s eyes and not through the protagonist’s eyes.
Weaving the weaver birds in and through this tail until they provide what eventually offers itself as a solution is both elegant and clever (and brave).
